CRESTON VETERINARY HOSPITAL Bank Stabilization Project

Location: Bank adjacent to parking lot of Creston Veterinary Hospital, Creston, BC

Client: Creston Veterinary Hospital

Objective: Stabilize bank adjacent to parking lot of veterinary hospital.

The Creston Veterinary Hospital and adjacent parking area was constructed on fill material. Erosion of a 48 m long section of bank forming one side of this fill was causing the pavement in the parking area to crack. Terra Erosion Control Limited was retained in the spring of 2003 to provide remediation measures. These measures consisted of installing soil bioengineering structures such as brush layers and broadcast seeding with an erosion control seed mix in order to vegetate the bank. Straw wattles were also installed in order to provide immediate control of surface erosion. Live cuttings used in the brush layers consisted of a mix of Willow (Salix ssp.) and Red-Osier Dogwood (Cornus stolonifera). Planting was machine-assisted, using a backhoe. These treatments have been successful to date at controlling erosion and stabilizing the bank with root mass.
